No

While the process of obtaining the necessary ancestral documents tracing your family history back to Greece may be a bit more complicated than in some other European countries, the result is certainly just as rewarding.  If you are able to successfully trace your family lineage back to Greece, you may be able to live, work, and study in any of the 28 countries throughout the European Union with no restrictions.

There are currently two ways to apply for Greek citizenship based on your family’s lineage.

If you know that you have an ancestor from Greece, we would be happy to discuss whether you can apply for citizenship. Below you will find a brief summary of what is required in order to apply.

Requirements

Many people whose parents or grandparents were born in Greece qualify for Greek citizenship through descent. Below are the personal requirements you must meet, as well as the documentation you must be able to present

Lineage Requirements

To meet the requirements for Greek citizenship, you must be able to meet one of the following requirements:
  • Have at least one biological parent (mother or father) of Greek origin or descent.
  • Be able to make a claim and prove your lineage to a grandparent that was born in Greece.

Paperwork Requirements

To apply for Greek citizenship, you must have the appropriate documents in order, all of which must be translated into Greek. You must be able to provide translated copies of:
  • Your own birth certificate
  • The birth certificate(s) and other relevant documents of your direct Czech ancestor

The most complicated part of the process tends to be tracking down your ancestor’s original documents in their Greek municipality of origin. This is where professional help becomes particularly helpful.

Are you required to travel?

Some countries require you to travel in order to receive your citizenship once you have proven to be related to a citizen. While you do need to travel to a Greek Consulate to complete the process, this means it is not required to leave your home country to reclaim Greek citizenship.
